Dr. Meyer is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Sciences at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a 2022 Honor Roll Member of the AVMA. He received his BA (Biology) from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1973, his DVM from Cornell University in 1980, and was board certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) in 1986. Dr. Meyer was previously on the faculty at North Carolina State University from 1983 to 2003 and retired from full time employment at Mississippi State University in 2022 after 18 years on the faculty. He is a past-president of the ACVAA (2010-2012).
Dr. Meyer was initially appointed to the AVMA Humane Endings panel in 2009. He has served as the Inhaled Methods Working Group leader for the 2013 and 2020 AVMA Euthanasia Guidelines and the 2016 Humane Slaughter Guidelines. He was also a contributing member of the 2019 Depopulation Guidelines Swine Working Group. Dr. Meyer was a contributor to sections of the Guidelines on consciousness and unconsciousness, pain and its perception, stress and distress, and the differences between sedation and anesthesia. Dr. Meyer is currently the Chairperson for the forthcoming 2023 update to the AVMA Humane Slaughter Guidelines.
Dr. Meyer was the US Representative to Animal Welfare in Killing for Disease Control, Better Training for Safer Food Initiative of the European Union, Pescara IT, 6-9 Oct 2015 and a member of the AVMA Ebola Livestock Response Plan Working Group in 2014. He served on the AVMA Humane Endings Program Committee for the AVMA Animal Welfare Symposiums of 2014, 2018, and 2023 and currently serves as human servant to one cat.
